How to download and use Google Maps offline

If you’re heading overseas and want access to Google Maps, you can download maps for the cities you’re visiting, then search directions without the need for a data connection.

Downloading areas and navigating online can be a great option when visiting areas where service is limited, or when you have limited data allowance, such as when travelling.

What this means is that you can download individual city maps before you depart using your home internet connection, or during the trip using hotel Wi-Fi. These maps will then be available for offline use in the downloaded cities.

When using Google Maps offline, you’ll be able to search addresses, places and businesses, and easily navigate to them. If you’re travelling to multiple cities, you also have the option to download multiple city maps at once and store these, then delete once you no longer need them.

It’s important to note that transit, bicycling, and walking directions are not available offline. Offline driving directions cannot provide traffic information, alternate routes, or lane guidance. These elements require a data connection to in order to provide up-to-date information.
